Matthew Tierney, born in Cork, Ireland, grew up in a brass banding family with Matthew’s grandfather who played trombone for the Casino Brass Band. Matthew began his own musical journey at age 9 at Macgregor State School before progressing to Mansfield State High School. After graduating high school, Matthew studied under Phil Ryan at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music where, in 2012, he completed his Bachelor of Music Studies majoring in Classical Cornet. During his time at the Conservatorium, Matthew played Repiano and Solo Cornet with the Conservatorium brass band. In 2013 and 2014, Matthew was a member of the National Australia Youth Brass Band on 2nd and 3rd cornet. Matthew joined the Windsor Brass Band in 2009 and very quickly progressed to Excelsior for the 2010 FABB contest. Matthew is currently studying a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) and his goal is to be a brass instrumental teacher in schools by next year.
Outside of his musical career, Matthew is a very passionate cricket supporter, regularly attending games in Brisbane since he was 7!
