Stephen Stein, born in Wellington, New Zealand, took up the cornet at 9 years old under tutelage of his father. Stephen joined Wellington South Band aged 14 where over the course of 4 years, he went up the ranks to Solo Cornet. At 19, Stephen was selected for the Salvation Army New Zealand National Youth Band and a year later he joined the Wellington Citadel Band on Solo Horn! By age 24, Stephen had moved back to the cornet section sitting in the solo cornet section, progressing again up to principal by age 28. Stephen moved to Flugel Horn in the Salvation Army New Zealand National Youth Band for 5 years whilst also serving as Deputy Bandmaster. Stephen was promoted to Bandmaster in 2001, a position he held for a further 6 years. In 2002, Stephen joined the Upper Hutt Brass Band where he played in 2 local contests before joining Wellington Brass on Tenor Horn in 2004 where he was apart of the bad that won the B Grade National Title in 2005. Stephen moved on to the Hutt City Brass on Tenor Horn and played 2 National B Grade Championships finishing 3rd in 2006. In 2007, Stephen moved to Australia and appointed Bandmaster of Carindale Salvation Army Band. Stephen played with Brisbane Excelsior Brass Band for a short time in 2009 before coming back full-time in 2012.
