Stuart starting his banding career in his home town, Bundaberg, playing in the Bundaberg Municipal Band under the direction of his trombone teacher, Robert Rotar.
Stuart joined Brisbane Excelsior when he shifted to Brisbane to study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music where he learnt under Arthur Middleton. Stuart has now been playing with Brisbane Excelsior for 20 years and the majority of that time as section principal.
Being a part of the band during a time of such growth and success, has been a very rewarding experience. The highlights, as well as winning many national contests, have certainly been the international tours – the feeling of going on stage and playing at the British Open was an experience that will be remembered for a very long time.
Stuart has received the following solo awards since playing in the band:
- QLD Brass Band Championships – Open Tenor Trombone Champion – 1996, 2011 & 2015
- Australian National Brass Band Championships – Open Tenor Trombone Champion – 2010 & 2013
- New Zealand Brass Band Championships – Open Tenor Trombone Champion – 2007
Stuart would like to thank his wife Kendre for her support, encouragement and patience over the many years that he has been involved with the band, especially during the five years that he served as Secretary.
