Easter holds a different significance for Australian brass band enthusiasts as it marks the time for the National Brass Band Championships. This year, the championships unfolded in Adelaide, South Australia, with the Brisbane Excelsior band making a determined bid to reclaim the coveted ‘Fireman’s Helmet’ trophy after securing second place in the previous year’s competition.

The band’s journey towards victory began early in January with the formation of a new professional partnership with musical director David Bremner, renowned as one of the most inspirational brass band conductors Down Under. Together with the efforts of Principal Cornet Dale Hosking, the band honed its skills and entered the competition in top form.

On Good Friday, amidst a lineup of ten bands, Brisbane Excelsior took the stage to deliver a captivating performance of their hymn “The Light of the World” and the challenging set testpiece “The World Rejoicing” by Edward Gregson. These pieces not only highlighted the band’s exceptional soloists but also showcased their meticulous attention to detail and cohesive sound.

The band’s momentum continued into Easter Sunday, where they presented their own choice march, “Knight Templar,” and testpiece, “Titan’s Progress.” Under David’s direction, the band delivered a stellar performance, leaving the stage with a sense of accomplishment.

The suspense peaked later that evening as the results were announced, declaring Brisbane Excelsior as the National ‘A’ Grade Champions for the ninth time in their history. In a neck-and-neck competition with Sydney, the band’s stellar performance in “The World Rejoicing” secured their overall victory, making the win all the more gratifying.

This triumph was not without acknowledging the outstanding performances of Sydney City Brass and Brisbane Brass, securing second and third places, respectively. The Brisbane Excelsior band’s victory not only underscores their musical excellence but also reflects the spirit of competition and camaraderie within the Australian brass banding community.
