Australian Champions to tackle NZ’s elite

Australian Champions, Brisbane Excelsior Band are pleased confirm that they will travel to Wellington to compete in the 2017 New Zealand National Championships in April.

As a direct result of the decision to go to New Zealand, XLCR will not be travelling to Launceston to defend the 2016 National Australian Championship title they won in Gawler, South Australia.

XLCR has won the Australian Championship title eight times in the last twelve years but were pipped in Sydney back in 2015 by Wellington Brass. The opportunity for the band to compete against its NZ foe once again, especially in the current NZ Champions’ home city of Wellington, is just too great an opportunity to pass up.

As an organisation, XLCR look at a multitude of aspects when choosing where to travel with the band. Along with cost and logistics, XLCR’s friendly rivalries with New Zealand’s Elite Bands and the opportunity to perform in one of Australasia’s top concert venues in the Michael Fowler Centre have proved massive drawcards. Further to this, the band has history in New Zealand having won two New Zealand titles in the last decade.

Band president Gareth Lawless said:

“Whilst I accept it is unfortunate to not be going to defend our Australian title, it is the right decision for our Band. Both the MD and the committee feel that this years’ New Zealand Contest has the potential to be one of the most memorable in recent times for Australasian Banding. The world class concert hall and exemplary organisation of NZ contests make it such an attractive option for the band. When you add the rivalry with a number of the top NZ bands into the mix, the trip truly becomes a mouth-watering prospect for the playing members”.

GARETH LAWLESS, PRESIDENT

Brisbane XLCR have been in fine form in the recent months, recording 2 CDs, performing with award winning local choirs and taking stride in their own concert series. However, it is on the contest stage where the band really finds its footing. The band’s Musical Director, Howard Taylor cannot wait to conduct the band in NZ:

“I’ve been looking forward to returning to NZ with XLCR for many years now. I hope we can re-create that special magic from 10 years ago after a double win at the NZ contest in 2007/08.”

HOWARD TAYLOR, MUSICAL DIRECTOR

New Year / New Website!

We’ve had a bit of a facelift and we’re super excited to finally launch our new website that has been in the works for several months now.

We’ve decided to include player profiles, an online ticketing system that allows our concert goers to purchase their tickets using their debit/credit cards, we’ve got a brand new shop and are planning on bringing in merchandise very soon. We’ve also included ways to share our pages through social media using the buttons below each of the articles.

Currently, we’re working towards integrating the Windsor side of the players profiles and the Windsor events – so watch this space!

If you have any questions please feel free to shoot us a message through our contact page.

Happy browsing!

Merry Christmas!

As we hurtle towards the end of the year we would like to wish all of our friends, families, supporters and fellow musicians an extremely Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all of your support throughout the previous year and we know that you will continue to do the same into 2017.

We at XLCR resume in Mid-January, and cannot wait to start rehearsing for the New Zealand Championships in Wellington!

End of Year Awards 2016

15492207_1349741751745079_4821020594551602629_nIt’s that time of year again – Christmas decorations, Christmas Carols, and of course, the annual Brisbane XLCR Inc. Band Awards Social event.

After our first BBQ last year, the band decided to hold another at Colleges Crossing, Ipswich for members of both Brisbane XLCR and Windsor Bands. Lots of food and drink were consumed and the band says a huge thanks to everyone who helped, but especially Michael Martin, Ross Moloney and Gareth Lawless for their contributions to the day. With the huge numbers of band children we were even blessed to have a visit by Santa Claus himself, who brought fantastic toys for all the children of the organization.

100 Years of Brass Bands in Parks

14054299_10209445184060733_6853642306123098159_o-1On Sunday 28th of August, the Brisbane Excelsior Band helped celebrate 100 years of entertaining Brisbane with music in parks. Performing on the Riverstage for the second time in as many years, XLCR were proud to support such a great concert, alongside several other local bands, including the Brisbane Municipal Concert Band, South Brisbane Federal Brass Band, University of Queensland Pipe Band, City of Brisbane Pipe Band and Irish Association Pipe Band.

After an impressive fanfare performed by the cornets from the Riverstage’s balcony, the two A Grade brass bands then combined to perform some repertoire from the early 20th century, including ‘The Dam Busters’ march.

Each of the bands then performed a short program by themselves. Brisbane Excelsior began their segment with the classic march ‘Death or Glory’, before featuring their cornet section and newly appointed Windsor Musical Director, Flugel soloist, Stu Lang with ‘Valero’ before closing with Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s grandslam work ‘Fire in the Blood’.

To finish off the concert, XLCR, Feds and the Brisbane Municipal Concert Band all graced the stage to perform together, ending with Holst’s ‘Mars’, which was arranged especially for the concert by Brisbane Muni’s conductor; David Jones. It was quite the experience with over 100 musicians on stage!

Thank you to everyone who came along to this fantastic afternoon and a huge well done to Helen and Brisbane Metropolitan Bands for organising such a well run concert!

Windsor welcome new MD!

c1e2529e-b356-4ff5-ad9b-f52566d78aee-1Windsor Brass are pleased to welcome Stuart Lang to the Musical Director position.

Stuart, who currently plays Flugel Horn with Brisbane XLCR, brings with him a wealth of talent and resources and has hit the ground running preparing Windsor for the upcoming Queensland State Brass Band Championships in Redcliffe, Oct 1-2.

Upon his appointment, Stuart said:

“I am thrilled at my appointment to the position of MD of Windsor Brass. I am excited at the prospect of improving my skills in Conducting, Score Interpretation, Programming and Performance, all which have been over time honed by significant experience both as a player and as an MD.

As Principal Cornet and Deputy Conductor of the Sydney Congress Hall Band, I trained under Dr Ronald Smart and the then MD Ronald Prussing, Principal Trombone of the SSO. This period included a concert tour of the UK culminating in performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

My leadership and people management skills were further developed by an interim period conducting the Hurstville Salvation Army Band , 6 years as MD of the Wollongong Salvation Army Band and in my last appointment, 8 years as MD of The Salvation Army Brisbane City Temple Band. During my terms as Leader of these bands, I led successful concert tours to Perth, Tasmania, and New Zealand with encouraging accolades.

Having assisted Windsor Brass in recent times, I recognise the potential and consider that I have the ability and enthusiasm along with a great bunch of terrific bandsmen to address the challenge of the leadership into the future.”

We thank Windsor’s leaving MD, Benjamin Tubb for his service to the band, and wish Stuart all the best for this new chapter in Windsor’s history.

100 Years of Bands in Parks Concert

'Death or Glory'

Brisbane XLCR play the classic march ‘Death or Glory’. One of the pieces that was played by the same band 100 years prior.

“A production that swoops between high and low culture and combines concert, theatre and dance in one category-defying package… it feels as if all human life is presented on stage. What is happening around the edges is always as intriguing as what is taking centre stage… It’s a show in which the gaps speak as eloquently as the action and messy humanity spills across the stage. Then they start to play and become one… absorbing.” (The Guardian)

“The whole piece creates a world in which a life can be celebrated.” (The Stage)
